God's Own Country (15)

Francis Lee | UK | 2017 | 104’

A timely movie for Brexit era Britain, this tough, sensual and finely-crafted piece of cinema deals with both coming-out and immigration in a thoughtful and hopeful way. Johnny is an unhappy, angry young guy working on the family farm in Yorkshire; Gheorghe is a hired hand brought in from Romania for a few weeks. Like a Dales Brokeback, the film is an empathetic depiction of two marginalised ways of life; God's Own Country is a deeply felt romance that harnesses the primal relationship between people and place.
