BILLY COBHAM AND ASERE 2007

Tour Dates: 10 – 28 May 2007

Billy Cobham is arguably the world’s greatest living drummer, legendary in his own lifetime from a long and distinguished musical career that began with playing with Miles Davis at the age of nineteen. From his collaborations with a host of top musicians including George Benson, Jack Bruce, Peter Gabriel, Count Basie, Oscar Peterson and John McLaughlin, Billy Cobham’s dazzling skills have led him to be regarded as one of the best drummers ever, combining great power and rhythmic dexterity with sensitivity and subtlety. Pioneering Cuban seven-piece band Asere have been impressing many over the past few years with a creative repertoire that’s both deeply respectful of their Cuban heritage but also has an exciting contemporary edge of its own, blessed by inventive song writing and a soulful groove. In 2002, Billy expressed a desire to work with Latin musicians and so Womad set up an encounter for him with Asere. Bill and Asere have established a relationship fired by mutual respect, spontaneity and enjoyment, and this short 4-date visit to Wales is their first tour together! The combination of Billy’s inspired drumming and Asere’s impressive musicianship and Cuban style makes for an awesome spectacle, a hugely enjoyable experience for both musicians and audience alike, and one to cherish for a lifetime!
